Following a call between the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, and US Secretary of State Antony Bliken, China complained of "new shocks" that continue to shake the relationship between the two countries. While Mr Yi acknowledged that the US had "put out positive messages that differed from the previous government" - a nod to the Trump administration's fractious relationship with China - Mr Yi criticised the Biden administration for failing to undergo "substantive change".
He said: "However, what the world sees is that the tone of US policy toward China has not undergone substantive change; nor [have] President Biden's statements been truly implemented."
"The US continues its wrong words and actions against China, causing new shocks in bilateral relations."
Listing his three demands, he said: "As a matter of urgency, the US should stop interfering in the Beijing Winter Olympics, stop playing with fire on the Taiwan issue and stop creating various anti-China 'cliques' to contain China."
The Foreign Minister added that confrontation with the US "will not stop China from growing strong" and external pressure may serve to "make the Chinese people more united."
However, Mr Yi said that Mr Biden had responded positively to President Xi Jinping's "three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation".

The White House confirmed in December that it will stage a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, as a protest against "crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights abuses."
New Zealand will also not be sending diplomatic representatives to the Games, which begin on 4 February.

The US's boycott came in response to Beijing's continued crackdown on ethnic minorities in China, its intervention in Hong Kong, and "other human rights abuses".
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said: “The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, given the PRC’s ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights abuses.
“The athletes on Team USA have our full support.

Responding to the US' announcement of the boycott, the Chinese Foreign Ministry hit out at the country for trying to "disrupt" the games.
It warned Mr Biden that the US "will pay a price for its mistakes".

Since Mr Biden took office a year ago, the US has reversed a number of its Trump-era policies, such as increasing its cooperation with China on climate change and toning down the country's anti-China rhetoric.
However, the US has maintained much of its economic policy, including tariffs on around $350billion worth of Chinese goods.
