Cold forces China to shut factories
China has ordered rotating closures of hundreds of factories to save power as demand surges amid freezing temperatures.
Power demand peaked this week after temperatures plunged and weekend storms dumped snow on northern China.
Many homes, especially in the south, lack central heating and residents are relying on electric space heaters.
In the major city of Wuhan, south-west of Shanghai, 1,815 steel mills, factories and food plants have been closing two days a week since December 29.
Wuhan, in Hubei province, has been hard hit since two generating stations were forced to shut down this week due to technical problems.
