The SpaceX boss and Tesla CEO shared an old conspiracy theory that Egypt’s pyramids were built by extraterrestrials. Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation, responded to Mr Musk’s tweet.
She wrote on Twitter: “I follow your work with a lot of admiration.
“I invite you and SpaceX to explore the writings about how pyramids were built and also to check out the tombs of the pyramid builders.
“Mr Musk, we are waiting for you.”
But Mr Musk seemed to step back from his initial claim when he posted a follow up which linked to an article explaining how the pyramids were likely built by humans living in an Egyptian settlement.
He wrote: “This BBC article provides a sensible summary for how it was done.”
Zahi Hawass, an Egyptian archaeologist, created a video response in Arabic debunking the alien conspiracy theory.
The video said: “This is a response from Zahi Hawass to American billionaire Elon Musk.”
Mr Hawass wrote: “What you said about the pyramids is completely hallucination, the pyramids are built by Egyptians.

“I found the tombs of the pyramids builders that tell everyone that the builders of the pyramids are Egyptians and they were not slaves.”
Egyptians built the pyramids thousands of years ago mainly to be used a tombs for their pharaohs.
But certain conspiracy theorists believe aliens build the structures in Egypt.
There are more than 100 surviving pyramids in the country.
The most famous pyramid in Egypt is the Great Pyramid of Giza which stands at more than 450ft.

In 2018 archaeologists became closer to understanding how the Great Pyramid was built nearly 4,500 years ago.
An ancient ramp was discovered at the site of Hatnub by researchers from the University of Liverpool and the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology in Cairo.
The researchers suggested the ramp was used to drag massive alabaster stones up a slope with sleds and rope.
Mr Musk’s tweet about the Egyptian pyramids is not the first time the SpaceX boss has talked about conspiracy theories.
In 2018, during an appearance on the comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, he said why he believes the world is living in a Matrix.
He said: “If you assume any rate of improvement at all, then games will be indistinguishable from reality, or civilization will end. One of those two things will occur.
“Therefore, we are most likely in a simulation, because we exist.”
He added: “I think most likely, this is just about probability, there are many, many simulations.
“You might as well call them reality, or you could call them multiverse.”
