China says police killed 12 in riot
A senior Chinese official said police killed 12 people during a July 5 riot in the western city of Urumqi.
The statement was a rare acknowledgement by the government that security forces opened fire.
The official Xinhua News Agency cites Xinjiang Governor Nur Bekri as saying police shot the rioters after first firing warning shots.
The late report said three of those shot died on the spot and nine died after treatment failed.
Xinhua cited Bekri as saying the death toll from the unrest has risen to 197.
A woman surnamed Wu from the information office of the Xinjiang regional government office confirmed the Xinhua report.
