A LOCAL resident in Derinkuyu, Turkey, discovered a secret underground city when he was renovating his house, a bombshell documentary revealed.
Secret underground city found below man's basement in Turkey
Thought to have been created during the Byzantine era in 780-1180AD, the network of kitchens, stables, churches, tombs, wells, communal rooms and schools was most likely used as a bunker. More than 20,000 people, including livestock and entire food supplies, are believed to have lived 85 metres underground. Heavy stone doors at the end of the caves show how insiders trapped themselves in to defend themselves against intruders.
He knocked down a wall in his basement and found a hidden room
The 18-storey city was discovered by chance when a man was renovating his house in 1963, it was revealed in Netflix’s “Top 10 Secret and Mysteries” series.
“He knocked down a wall in his basement and found a hidden room,” the 2017 documentary detailed.
“What he accidentally discovered was an ancient underground city.
“The bizarre underground complex is yet to be fully explored.
“Archaeologists have discovered eight layers so far and believe there could be another 12 below.”
It is believed the secret tunnels were used as a bunker to protect locals from the Arab–Byzantine wars between the 7th and 11th century.
Amazingly, it is not the only of its kind to be discovered.
The chambers are connected to other subterranean cities by tunnels stretching several miles long.
Some have even theorised they were used to protect locals from a “war with the Gods”.
