India news: Four dead and 16 injured in fire at luxury Mumbai tower block
A FIRE in Mumbai, India, has killed four people and injured 16 in a luxury apartment block.
Shocking pictures show thick black smoke billowing from a residential tower block in India's financial hub of Mumbai.
The blaze spread quickly through the 12th floor of the 17-storey building in the Parel suburb.
Flames rose through the upper floors, with 20 more people needing emergency rescue.
An elderly woman is thought to be among the dead.
Mumbai's chief fire officer, Prabhat Rahangdale said: "A criminal offence will be declared. The building will be labelled as unsafe and it will be evacuated.
“The fire sprinklers were not working at all.
A fire department official said efforts to extinguish the blaze were still ongoing, but the situation was under control.
The 16 injured people were taken to hospital and were in stable condition.
It was the third deadly fire in Mumbai in seven months.
Last December, fire swept through a rooftop restaurant in Mumbai, killing more than a dozen people, most of them women.
