It all began when Donald Trump showed up to a Fashion Week party hosted by model agency top man Paolo Zampolli, who introduced him to supermodel Melania Knauss.
Knauss was 28 and Mr Trump, who was 24 years her senior, was then famous for being a real estate mogul.
After two years of dating, Trump asked Melania to move in with him at Trump Tower.
In the following years, the two would go on to date on and off until their engagement in 2004.
Mr Trump proposed to Knauss at the Costume Institute Gala, adorning her finger with a $1.5 million diamond engagement ring he picked out himself.
Melania’s wedding dress, said at the time to be one of the most expensive wedding gowns ever made worth an estimated $100,000, was designed by John Galliano for Dior.
The couple spent their honeymoon at Mar-a-Lago, the beach resort that Mr Trump owns in Palm Beach, Florida.
After marrying in 2005, the two welcomed their son Barron in 2006. Barron Trump is the couple's only child.
During a 2005 CNN interview, Mr Trump described his relationship as stress-free: "We literally have never had an argument. We just are very compatible."
In June 2015, Mr Trump announced he was running for president.
Melania accompanied him to some campaign events, but largely stayed in New York with Barron while Mr Trump criss-crossed the country holding rallies.
Since Melania moved to the White House in June she has embraced the duties of being a first lady and appeared at many more official events and trips with her husband.
Melania say’s she plans to continue to be a key supporter of her husband during his time in the White House, and plans to channel prior first ladies as she embarks on this new role.
"I would be very traditional. Like Betty Ford or Jackie Kennedy. I would support him," she said.
