While most of the UK is being blasted by an ongoing heatwave, the Met Office has named the areas which are set to be drenched with heavy rain showers as soon as this Friday.

Though the heatwave itself is set to last into the weekend for many parts of Britain, there are some lucky areas which will see the hot weather interrupted sooner.

The forecaster’s weather maps outline the key parts of the country which could enjoy a refreshing downpour, and it’s not just up north and in Scotland but in the north of England too on Friday.

The Met Office’s latest weather forecast maps show that areas including Manchester, Preston, Sheffield, Birmingham, Leicester and Huddersfield as well as Stoke-on-Trent are among the key English areas which can expect rainfall in the early hours of Friday morning.

In Wales, Wrexham and Swansea may also enjoy some downpours, while in Scotland, large parts of the north and central Scotland including Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Fort William, as well as most of the Highlands, can expect heavy downpours, as of 4am Friday, June 26.

Later on in the morning, the rain will move north and soak cities including Leeds, York, Lincoln and Newcastle, as of 6am on Friday and by 7am it will move to the East coast and arrive in Hull and Boston.

The Met Office says in its forecast for Friday: “Another hot day in the east on Friday. Fresher conditions gradually arriving from the west into the weekend, but this accompanied by spells of rain and thundery showers.”

Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecaster says more rain could arrive from Sunday too.

In its long range forecast covering June 28 to July 7, it added: “Fairly changeable conditions at first with periods of rain and showers, and there could be some thundery outbreaks at times. Perhaps a drier start to July for many, although the northwest may still see some rain at times, and perhaps accompanied by some strong winds. Temperatures remain widely above average, and there remains a chance of some very warm or hot weather returning, mainly across the south.”
