The Met Office has forecast a wet and cool day on Thursday, with a sheet of rain covering the UK. In its week-ahead video forecast, the weather agency predicted June 11 will be the wettest day this week, with showers and cool temperatures expected in the run-up.

A huge band of rain can be seen moving northwest across the whole of the UK in its forecast video, at times completely covering Scotland, Wales and England, with lighter showers over Northern Ireland. The Met Office predicted: "A much wetter day expected on Thursday as a weather system moves into the west. Turning heavy on western facing hills. Staying cool."

England and Northern Ireland have been forecast to peak at around 16C, with slightly cooler temperatures in Cornwall and South Wales, at 15C.

Scotland will drop to the chilliest temperatures, with 14C forecast around Aberdeenshire and 13C over northwest Scotland, reaching 15C in the south.

Before the washout on Thursday, the weather agency forecast showers and potential thunder for Tuesday, with the rain continuing into Wednesday. Temperatures will remain below average for most of the week, but all is not lost for the weekend, with a brighter forecast ahead.

It predicted the showers will begin to clear and temperatures will start to rise again, increasing to highs of 19C in the south of England, and 16C in Scotland and Northern Ireland towards the end of the week.

For Friday, the Met Office forecast: "Showers remain in the north but turning drier in the south. Staying cloudy as temperatures start to climb to end the week."
