A Met Office long-range forecast is suggesting a "potential transition to colder weather" which could "also increases the chance of snow across parts of the country".

The forecast covers a period going from January 20 to January 29, the Met Office said. The full forecast read: Throughout this period, the UK will see a battle between Atlantic weather systems attempting to arrive from the west while high pressure and colder conditions attempt to exert some influence from the east.

"Initially, milder Atlantic air is expected to dominate. This should maintain often cloudy, changeable conditions with showers or longer spells of rain for most. The wettest weather is in the western parts of the country, drier in the east. Temperatures overall likely to be around average, with some night frosts in clearer areas.

"Later in the period, there is an increased chance that conditions will turn colder. This aspect of the forecast is still somewhat uncertain, but the potential transition to colder weather also increases the chance of snow across parts of the country."

Other forecasts suggest a Siberian chill for the south of England, and London could be on the cards according to new forecast maps predicting up to three inches of snow. Forecasters' WXCharts images show the white stuff making a possible rare appearance in the far south of the country and in the capital from January 27 into January 28.

According to new charts, snow could almost blanket the entire country by 6am on January 28, with several inches on the ground from the far north of Scotland all the way down to London and the south coast. Only Northern Ireland and parts of Devon and Cornwall, and Pembrokeshire look set to escape.

For the UK as a whole, the South of the country usually sees less snow than the rest of the nation, with heavy snowfall more common in Scotland, northern England, and on higher ground in Wales and Northern Ireland.
