Britain is bracing for a powerful spell of winter weather as storm maps turn deep purple, signalling severe winds and the first signs of snow sweeping across the country next week.

Forecast charts from WXCharts show gusts reaching up to 73mph across parts of the UK by Tuesday night into Wednesday, November 26. The most intense winds are expected along western coasts of Scotland, Wales, and southwest England, while inland areas could experience gusts between 50 to 65mph.

As the system moves eastwards, forecasters warn that heavy rain and sleet will affect much of the country, with up to 3cm of snow likely over higher ground in northern England and Scotland.

The strong winds and wintry mix could cause travel disruption, power cuts, and hazardous driving conditions, especially on exposed routes.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast (Tuesday 25 November to Tuesday 9 December) highlights a period of mixed and uncertain weather ahead.

A forecaster said: “Whilst the expected weather patterns during late November are very uncertain, there is a greater chance of spells of high pressure during this period, bringing more in the way of dry weather compared to the current weather pattern, which also increases the chances of overnight fog and frost.

"There will probably still be some spells of rain, showers, and stronger winds though, especially in the west. Hill snow is also a possibility, mainly in the north. Overall, near or slightly above average temperatures are most likely, though some colder spells are also possible, especially should any prolonged settled spells develop.”

The purple and red zones dominating the latest wind maps highlight widespread gusts across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and parts of England, with the strongest winds expected to impact western coastal regions and upland areas.

While calmer, high-pressure conditions may develop towards early December, this storm marks a sharp reminder that winter has arrived in force, bringing both stormy weather and the potential for snow in northern parts of the UK.

The Met Office advises people to stay alert to weather warnings and to take extra care when travelling during periods of strong winds and poor visibility.
