Weather maps are turning red as another blast of heat is set to hit the country for 48 hours, according to a forecast. Maps from WXCharts, which uses Met Desk data, forecast high temperatures in the UK at the end of this week, on July 18 and 19.

The maps, generated on July 14, suggest the West Midlands (Gloucester, Birmingham) and East Anglia (King’s Lynn, Peterborough) will be the hottest areas during these two days, where temperatures could be between 27C and 28C. The rest of the Midlands (Northampton, Milton Keynes, Cambridge) will be between 25C and 26C, according to the maps. The South of England (Plymouth, Southampton, Brighton), Wales (Cardiff, Conwy), and the North of England (Manchester, York, Newcastle) will be between 23C and 24C. The East of Scotland (Aberdeen, Edinburgh) will be between 21C and 22C. The rest of Scotland (Inverness, Fort William, Glasgow), Northern Ireland (Derry, Belfast), and the Northwest of England (Carlisle) will be between 16C and 20C.

While temperatures may be unbearably hot for some and above the average, the new suggested blast of heat would not be considered a heatwave by the Met Office. This is because the weather agency defines a heatwave as a sustained surge in temperatures, lasting for at least three consecutive days, with maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding a defined threshold, which varies across the UK.

The Met Office said of the period: “Weather conditions are expected to be changeable overall across the UK during this forecast period, which probably will start unsettled across the UK, before probably transforming into something a bit more settled after the first weekend.

“Any settled spells could persist for several days at a time and are likely to be accompanied by plenty of sunshine. Interspersed with this will be cloudier, more unsettled intervals which will bring some showers or longer spells of persistent rainfall.

“Some of the rainfall is likely to be heavy in places, with a risk thunderstorms at times as well. Temperatures are expected to be above normal for the majority of the UK throughout this period. Some hot conditions are likely to develop at times, particularly in southern and eastern areas of the UK.”

Met Office five-day forecast

Tonight: Cloudy in northern Scotland with outbreaks of rain. Dry with clear spells elsewhere, before a band of wet and windy weather moves into the west. Cooler than recent nights.

Tuesday: A band of rain will move east through the day, followed by heavy scattered showers. Windy for many, particularly across the south. Feeling fresh.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Dry for many, although scattered showers are possible at times, mainly in the north. Increasingly warm through the week, particularly in the south, with muggy nights returning.
