Britons should be braced for some blisteringly cold conditions on the way in just a matter of days with parts of the nation set for a -5C Arctic blast.

New weather maps show the nation bathed in blue as forecaster WXCharts shows for Friday, October 11 the entire country is likely to experience freezing overnight temperatures.

In for a particularly cold night will be those living in the far north, especially in exposed parts of the Highlands of Scotland and on the eastern side of the Scottish borders.

There's even a chance some might see the first flurries of snow for the colder months, as the white stuff is forecast for the Cairngorms around Aviemore.

It's likely the freezing blast coming from the Arctic will bring the coldest temperatures of autumn so far, just as many elderly people face being without their winter fuel payments after they were axed by the Chancellor.

In a statement the Met Office said the colder weather was likely to arrive later this week after a period of wetter conditions.

They said: "The rest of the week continues to look unsettled, with rain and showers affecting most areas at times, but probably less heavy and less widespread overall.

"Things also look to turn colder, with temperatures dipping from Wednesday in the north and all areas experiencing below average temperatures from Thursday.

"Night frosts are expected for some regions, and snow is possible for the higher mountains of Scotland."

Speaking about Hurricane Kirk, which is tracking across the Atlantic right now, the Met Office said the weather system, which will not be a hurricane when it reaches Europe, was likely to miss the UK based on current models.

They added: "We have been keeping a close eye on the track of ex-Hurricane Kirk as it travels across the Atlantic.

"There is increasing confidence now that it will track to the south of the UK, bringing heavy rains and strong winds to northern France.

"Although north and south shifts of the systems track remain possible, the threat of significant impacts to the UK from this system are now much reduced."
