The UK is getting set for scorching weather that could blast Britain in just hours with blistering temperatures of up to 31C.

As rain pelted down across the country over the last few days, some Brits may be forgiven for giving up summer.

But new weather maps show that baking conditions could be back in just hours - with the Met Office seeming to back up the predictions.

In its "Deep Dive" weekly weather forecast for the UK, meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "If we look at London, and temperatures are going to rise as we go through this week.

"So up to mid and high 20s, probably even low 30s in some places on Friday - 30C or 31C looks- quite likely."

The latest maps from Netweather show temperatures could reach 26C by 6pm this evening in and around London.

Although it is a cooler picture in the north of the country this evening, Scunthorpe is still predicted to hit maximums of 24C. A heatwave is classed as anything over 25C. The lowest temperature is predicted to be a cool 12C in central northern Scotland.

On Friday, that intense heat looks set to spread further north - with London hitting a maximum of 29C by 6pm and Middlesbrough and Sunderland - both in the North East - predicted to reach highs 25C.

It’s a very similar picture on Saturday in terms of locations, times and temperatures - although Sunday looks set to be cooler.

Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at the British Weather Services, said: "Actually things picking up over the next few days, might crack 30C in London on Friday. Still a degree of swings and roundabouts for the UK as a whole this side of August."

He said: "Actually things picking up over the next few days, might crack 30C in London on Friday. Still a degree of swings and roundabouts for the UK as a whole this side of August.”

The Met Office predictions for the next few days also look promising for sunseekers.

Its prediction for tonight is "plenty of evening sunshine before a mostly dry night" and for tomorrow it says apart from in Northern Ireland and western Scotland it is “largely dry with sunny spells elsewhere, feeling very warm in the sunshine.”

The outlook for Friday to Sunday says: "Mostly dry and very warm or hot on Friday.

"Thundery showers on Saturday and likely remaining hot in the east or southeast. Cooler, cloudier with some rain likely on Sunday."
