THE UK was battered by heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms on Tuesday and the Met Office has issued weather warnings for parts of the nation on Wednesday too. Where is rain due to fall today and is the UK on flood alert?
BBC Weather: Thunderstorms set to batter Britain
Heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms are forecast for Wednesday morning, with continued potential disruption to travel and flooding. The weather took a turn for the worse on Tuesday evening after Britain was battered by wet conditions earlier this month as well. Meteorologists are warning there is a chance of train delays and cancellations across the affected regions on Wednesday, as well as road closures and even power cuts to homes and businesses.
Where is rain due to fall today?
The thunderstorms could merge into areas if more prolonged and widespread rain on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
In some locations as much as two inches of rain could fall, while most will see about an inch and a half.
Whilst rain and flooding is likely to be the largest impact, hail, lightning and gusty winds will be additional hazards.

Here are the areas affected by thunderstorms which could cause heavy rain:
East Midlands
Derby, Derbyshire, Leicester, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Rutland.
East of England
Bedford, Cambridgeshire, Central Bedfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Luton, Norfolk, Peterborough, Southend-on-Sea, Suffolk and Thurrock.

London & South East England
Bracknell Forest, Brighton and Hove, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Greater London, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Medway, Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire, Portsmouth, Reading, Slough, Southampton, Surrey, West Berkshire, West Sussex, Windsor and Maidenhead and Wokingham.
South West England
Bath and North East Somerset, Bournemouth, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Poole, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire.
West Midlands
Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands Conurbation and Worcestershire.
Yorkshire & Humber
East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, North East Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire.
The Met Office says this is what to expect from Tuesday’s weather warning:
“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
“Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”
Is the UK on flood alert?
There are currently four flood warnings and 23 flood alerts across the UK, up from 11 on Tuesday evening.
The flood warnings, which means flooding is expected and immediate action should be taken are in place for the following areas:
- Great Steeping and Firsby
- River Steeping in Wainfleet All Saints
- River Vyrnwy at Maesbrook
- River Vyrnwy at Melverley
The 23 flood alerts, which means flooding is possible and people should prepare to take action, are in effect for the following areas:
- Chertsey Bourne
- Cranleigh Waters
- Cut
- Emm Brook
- Langford and Wendlebury Brooks from Stratton Audley down to near Merton
- Loughborough Urban Watercourses
- Minor Watercourses in North Kesteven
- River Blackwater and The Cove Brook
- River Cole and Dorcan Brook
- River Leen and Day Brook in Nottinghamshire
- River Maun in Nottinghamshire
- River Severn in Gloucestershire
- River Steeping
- River Thame and Chalgrove Brook
- River Trent from Cromwell Weir to Gainsborough
- River Trent in Derbyshire
- River Trent Tributaries in Nottinghamshire
- River Wandle area in the London Boroughs of Wandsworth, Merton, Lambeth, Croydon and Sutton
- River Wreake in Leicestershire
