Donald Trump's State of the Union speech 'was full of hidden agenda'

Donald Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday featured opposition interruptions, self-promotion of the president's policies, patriotic displays including an Olympic team, and a relentless litany of grievances blaming domestic and foreign forces for the nation's challenges.

According to a behaviour expert who examined it, the speech was laden with deliberate tactics.

Psychotherapist Shelly Dar, who specialises in behaviour and confidence, suggests the entire presentation centred on "control and reframing", right down to its duration.

"A 108 minute address is not accidental. Length itself becomes dominance. It signals stamina, command and refusal to be rushed, particularly at a moment when approval ratings and court rulings are challenging him."

She highlighted his pattern of constructing a narrative through repetition, reports the Mirror US.

Dar said: "The repeated line 'we're winning so much' is classic narrative override. When external indicators are mixed, repetition works to implant certainty. It is less about data and more about emotional contagion. If he sounds convinced, supporters feel steadied."

Furthermore, when examining the tone employed throughout the address, Shelly noted Trump maintained composure apart from deliberate exceptions.

"His tone, less bombastic but still combative, suggests modulation rather than softening. The stoic exchange with Chief Justice Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett's expressionless response create a visible tension."

One of the most widely shared moments from the address was footage showing the President rebuking Democratic Party members for remaining seated when he requested people to stand if they believed the government's primary duty is to protect American citizens, rather than undocumented immigrants.

Shelly remarked on that instance: "By chastising the court while standing feet away, he projects defiance and signals to voters that institutional pushback will not restrain him.

"The darker immigration language and public calling out of Democrats sharpens division. Psychologically, this consolidates his base.

"The hidden agenda appears clear, and it is to frame himself as strong, embattled and victorious, and make opposition look obstructive in contrast."

Regarding his display of support for the US Men's ice hockey squad - amid controversy for supposedly ridiculing the Women's side - she noted that "the theatrical use of hockey players and military figures injects patriotism and spectacle. It shifts the emotional temperature from legal controversy to national pride. That is strategic anchoring."
