A man caught up in the terrifying grips of Hurricane Milton recounted seeing "giant blue explosions" while enduring the storm's first harrowing night.

Despite advance warnings to evacuate, some Floridians, like Stephan, chose to weather the storm at home, later sharing their ordeal on social media.

In a harrowing TikTok video captioned: "What I've seen already Hurricane Milton," Stephan captures the encroaching flood as his building begins to fill with water and the nearby canal strains under the relentless waves.

Yet, amid flooding garages and streets, it was the sight of the "giant blue explosions" – likely caused by electrical malfunctions – that seemed most shocking.

With the hurricane far from over, Stephan grimly noted: "I'm not even halfway through this". He continued, showing the extent of the situation.

He said: "My garage is flooded. The streets are flooded. Who knew when generators flooded they made giant blue explosions. This whole canal going through downtown Tampa is going to flood and hit these streets.

"I've seen umbrellas and s*** flying around. I've got to stay up until 4am to make sure I don't die."

Stephan finds himself trapped as Hurricane Milton rages on, but miraculously, his power remains and the flooding is yet to reach his doorstep. The public anxiously refreshes his social media for news, voicing their concern for his wellbeing with comments such as: "Literally refreshing the page to make sure you're still alive, bless."

Another wrote: "Now it feels like my responsibility to keep checking on a random guy I met on TikTok every 30 minutes to make sure he's still safe."

Some offer advice in reaction to Stephan's posts about venturing outside, suggesting: "Hey friend if you leave your apartment again put something to hold the door open. Stairwells lock in emergencies."

Another viewer encourages him, saying: "You've got people from every state watching at minimum to make sure you stay safe."

In a subsequent update, Stephan notes he "thought" he "survived Hurricane Milton" and shares footage showing the city of Tampa weathering the storm, which he describes as "worse than I expected".

Despite official evacuation advisories, other residents choose to face the hurricane from the precarious safety of their homes.
