Lockerbie bomber ‘deal’
THE Lockerbie bomber could be on his way home in as little as 12 weeks, after Libya requested he be transfered from a jail in Scotland.
Scottish ministers have been asked to rule whether cancer stricken Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi should be allowed to serve the remainder of his life sentence in the north African country.
The move comes less than week after the British and Libyan governments ratified a controversial prisoner transfer deal.
Megrahi, 57, Britain’s worst convicted mass murderer, denies any involvement in the December 1988 blast which killed 259 passengers and crew on Pan Am flight 103 and claimed 11 lives in the Dumfriesshire town.
A final decision on his return will be made by Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill.
Megrahi, a former Libyan intelligence officer, would have to agree to drop his ongoing appeal against his conviction before a ruling could be made.
