World Cup carnage: Ambulance wrecked as England fans celebrate World Cup win
ENGLAND fans have been condemned after yesterday’s World Cup victory celebrations resulted in an ambulance being smashed in London.
World Cup: England fans jump on ambulance in celebration
Police are probing over-zealous fans in Borough who jumped on an ambulance while celebrating the Three Lions’ 2-0 win over Sweden, which booked England a place in the tournament’s semi-final for the first time in 28 years.
World Cup fever quickly turned into carnage when fans jumped on top of the vehicle, which was parked up on the side of the road while paramedics helped a person in need.
The ambulance ended up with a smashed front window, torn-off wing mirrors and dents in the bodywork.
It was left so badly damaged it was unable to respond to patients.
London Ambulance Service (LAS) condemned the incident.
LAS tweeted a snap of the damage with the caption: “We're delighted with the result, but this has put a big dampener on the celebrations for us.
“While our officer attended a call nearby, this car was damaged in Borough High Street during the celebrations after the game.”
They added: “It's now off the road to be repaired.”
Social media users attacked the actions of the fans below the post.
One said: “The amount of money wasted on poor behaviour in this country would financially save the NHS.”
Another replied: “Make the culprits pay for the damage, any funds collected can go towards another ambulance or much needed equipment.
“If we had to pay for health care the morons that did this pathetic crime would think twice maybe! That is of course if they have a dozen brain cells between them.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Police were called at around 5pm on Saturday 7 July to reports of a large group of people disrupting traffic in Borough High Street.
“A London Ambulance Service vehicle was damaged after members of the public climbed on it. The windows of the vehicle were also smashed.”
They added: “Detectives from Southwark are investigating and are aware of images circulating via social media.
“Enquiries are underway to trace those involved. Officers ask anyone with information – and advise anyone who may have damaged the London Ambulance Service vehicle - to make contact with Southwark CID via 101 quoting ref 5683july07.
“There have been no arrests at this stage.”
