Congregation discover cause of church roof leak after 76 years - a Nazi bullet
IT TOOK them 76 years, but a congregation has finally found the cause of a leak in its church roof – a bullet hole made by Nazi bombers during the Second World War.
Builders discovered the leak in the church roof was caused by a Nazi bullet
Restoration workers at St Peter’s Church, in Folkestone, Kent, investigated the mysterious leak, which often left visitors drenched.
They found a bullet hole in the church spire, and concluded the damage was caused when Luftwaffe Messerschmitts attacked the town in 1941.
Remarkably, old records even show the exact time the Victorian church was under fire by the Germans.
Archived reports show a raid by Nazi bombers, who made “a lightning attack in the harbour area” on March 27, 1941, at 9.23am.

Church warden David Wilson said: “The church roof has been leaking long enough for everyone to believe that it has always leaked.
“It is good to now know the cause and rectify it – even if it has taken some 75 years.”
The spire will now be supported by a new splint – but the damaged oak timber will remain.
