Maajid Nawaz, himself a former extremist, was faced with anger from his guest after describing former Guantanamo Bay Moazzam Begg as an “extremist”.
Begg was detained in the US military facility in Cuba for just under two years after being arrested in Pakistan in February 2002 suspected of being a member of al-Qaeda.
He was later released in 2005 without charge.
The caller, known only as Abbas, from Redbridge, took offence and attempted to argue the host’s own point of view.

The UN and the US are as bad as the Taliban and ISIS, in your view?
Nawaz told his LBC listeners and guest that Begg had left Britain on his own accord to live under Taliban rule, which left his guest insisting it “absolutely” did not make him an extremist unless he was “partaking in that particular regime”.
“It’s so beautiful, everyone can hear you, Abbas,” added the host. “This is the problem with you, not me.
“The problem with the people like you who call in outrage and then expose themselves on live radio for being apologists for extremists.”

Abbas then said “ludicrous” for Nawaz to compare his actions to somebody leaving the UK to join the Nazis.
Nawaz hit back: “The UN and the US are as bad as the Taliban and ISIS, in your view?
The Taliban were an evil terrorist organisation, can you accept that?”
After his guest skirted around the subject, the host added: “Repeat after me, the Taliban were an evil terrorist organisation.”
In response, Abbas said: “I’m not going to repeat that Maajid.”
Struggling to contain his laughter, Nawaz proclaimed it “wonderful entertainment” to speak to people like his guest, inviting him to participate in further debates.
