'Muddle on muddle!' Tories cheer as PM DESTROYS Sturgeon's 'OBSESSIVE' independence bid
THERESA May was met with cheers as she described Nicola Sturgeon’s “tunnel vision” bid for independence as “obsessive”.
Theresa May SLATES Nicola Sturgeon in conference speech
The prime minister was speaking in Cardiff as she tours Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in an attempt to create a Brexit consensus ahead of Article 50.
During her 30-minute speech to Conservative members, Mrs May mocked the SNP for it’s “muddled” argument to break up the United Kingdom.
She told delegates: “We’ve seen that tunnel vision on display again this week. The SNP argue we must break up the UK because we are leaving the EU.
“But three years ago, they campaigned for a result that would have taken Scotland out of the EU altogether."
Theresa May branded Nicola Sturgeon's independence bid "obsessive"
We’ve seen that tunnel vision on display again this week
The room erupted into laughter as Mrs May quipped: “They’re happy to see power rest in Brussels, but if those powers come back to London, they want them given to Edinburgh so they can give them back to Brussels.
“Now they apparently say, as an independent Scotland they would no longer seek to become a member of the EU after a vote for separation - it’s muddle on muddle.”
The SNP claims Scots should be given another say on independence to stop the country being dragged out of the Brussels bloc “against its will”.
The prime minister was speaking at the Welsh Conservative conference on Friday
In June’s historic referendum last year, 1.6 million Scots choose to Remain in the EU, while just over one million voted Leave.
However, in 2014, over two million Scottish residents rejected the idea of going alone.
Mrs May accused the party of ignoring those voters, as she said it “seems to count for nothing”.
She continued: “It's now clear, that using Brexit as the pre-text to engineer a second independence referendum has been the SNP’s sole objective ever since last June.
“But, it would be bad for Scotland, bad for the United Kingdom and bad for us all. The coming negotiations with the EU will be vital for everyone in the United Kingdom.”
Angus Robertson warns May Scotland WILL get independence
Earlier on Friday, the SNP’s Deputy Leader Angus Robertson accused the Conservatives of “running scared”.
Speaking at the party’s spring conference in Aberdeen he raged: “Let there be no doubt, the people of this country will have their referendum, they will have their choice, they will not be denied their say.
“If the prime minister refuses to engage on the terms of the referendum before Brexit takes place, then she is effectively trying to block the people of Scotland having a choice over their future.
“That would be a democrat outrage.”
