REVEALED: Top five causes of household arguments - how many can YOU relate to?
HOT-tempered British lovers fall out because of arguments about heating more than any other issue, a new study has found.
A study found that heating is the top cause for household arguments
In the research, by oil distributor Emo Oil, almost one-third (29 per cent) of couples cited rows over central heating as the most likely reason for falling out.
Getting the hump over household chores (26 per cent) and disagreements regarding interior design decisions (22 per cent) were also common grounds for grumpiness.
Although more than three quarters of those surveyed (82 per cent) said they were happy with their living arrangements, 62 per cent of respondents claimed disputes over heating occurred at least once every three months.
The study found that men (54 per cent) are more likely than women to tamper with the thermostat to save money, while residents in the North West were the worst culprits, with 34% per cent citing heating as the main cause of quarrels in the home.
Disagreements relating to household chores were also high on the list
General mess (16 per cent) and cooking (12 per cent) completed the top five, with data gleaned from a poll of 1,394 UK adults.
It seems here in the UK, we just can't seem to agree on central heating issues in the home
Suzanne Waddell, marketing manager at Emo Oil, said: "It's surprising to see that despite a large proportion of Britons stating they're happy with their current living arrangements, including the person they live with, we still get really irked by the small day to day things they do.
"It seems here in the UK, we just can't seem to agree on central heating issues in the home and allow it to be a frequent cause of rows. We recommend sitting down at least once or twice a year to discuss a heating plan that everybody is happy with and then there are no nasty surprises later down the line."
