On a pebble, the true meaning of Christmas
A MYSTERY artist has been spreading the message of Christmas by leaving hand-painted pebbles depicting the baby Jesus dotted around a seaside town.
The brightly-coloured stones have appeared on bollards, in phone boxes, at cash machines, in shops and on window ledges in Newquay, Cornwall.[>
They feature Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes and are left on a little pile of straw. The artist, a local who wants to remain anonymous, says he has been leaving the delightful gifts “to spread the real meaning of Christmas and touch people’s hearts”.[>
He has spent nearly 90 hours painting about 300 pebbles, which began appearing two weeks ago.[>
Bel Wilkins, 24, who found one of the stones at the shop where she works, said: “We kept it because we thought it was really sweet and we realised, from chatting to other people, that they have got them as well.[>
“It’s all a bit of a mystery really. It’s a really nice little gesture – a really nice, subtle Christmas meaning.”[>
