Osborne SQUIRMS over Remain LIES but insists freedom of movement IS in national interest
GEORGE OSBORNE had no answer after being confronted with his infamous apocalyptic economic warnings over Brexit.
George Osborne admits Project Fear didn't work
The former Chancellor campaigned furiously for Remain and continues to be adamant the UK will be "poorer" because of the Brexit decision.
Speaking on Sunday Mr Osborne said Britain needs to have the "closest possible relationship with EU countries" in a swipe at Hard Brexiteers and those keen to leave the single market.
But, during his appearance on The Andrew Marr Show, he was faced with uncomfortable questions over his notorious doom-and-gloom referendum warnings that have so far failed to come to pass.
Andrew Marr grilled George Osborne over his behaviour during the referendum campaign
He was asked by Marr: "You had all these bloodcurdling warnings – the economic bomb, the punishment budget – and people did not believe you, they just did not listen to you."
While he admitted he was "not a big fan" of having a referendum in the first place, Mr Osborne admitted the campaign he led "lacked the authenticity and optimism" of the Leave vote.
But the Tory MP remained resolute as he told Marr Britain should be open to continuing with freedom of movement – if it meant the best deal for Britain.
He said the Brexit vote meant an EU trade deal was a bigger priority than any free movement controls, despite controlling immigration being a red line for many Brexiteers.
The former Chancellor condemned moves to scrap access to the single market as the "biggest single act of protectionism in British history".

I was not a big fan of having a referendum in the first place
Mr Osborne said: "I would not go into the negotiations with red lines.
"We need to get the best deal for Britain. That should address people’s fears about people coming here not working or not integrating.
"But, let’s not lose the massive contribution immigrants make to our society.
"We can’t tow ourselves out into the Atlantic. Europe is our neighbour.
"We may be able to conduct new free trade deals with Australia and America. But we can’t forget Germany or France."

Viewers attacked the former Chancellor for refusing to acknowledge what the EU vote meant.
One user tweeted: "George Osborne just doesn't give up! He just can't understand that there's life outside the EU."
Another added: "One reason you lost referendum is because the UK wants CONTROL back over immigration. No more open borders."
A viewer also said: "Osborne now looking to overturn vote in Parliament by the back door. Wouldn't trust him at all."
Mr Osborne has recently sought to mount a comeback following his humiliation after the EU referendum.
Piers Morgan even tweeted that George Osborne looked like future prime ministerial material during his BBC appearance.
