15 years for axe attacker who fractured policewoman’s skull
A CRAZED axeman has been jailed for a minimum of 15 years for attacking a policewoman, leaving her with a fractured skull.
PC Lisa Bates was attacked by and axe-wielding Nathan Sumner
PC Lisa Bates also shattered her ankle tumbling down a flight of stairs trying to escape the swinging blows of Nathan Sumner, 36.
He turned on Lisa, 32, when she and PC Mark Garrett responded to a 999 call to his Sheffield flat where he was rowing with his girlfriend.
As she fled, she fell down the stairs and Sumner, described by his lawyer as “profoundly ill” at the time, repeatedly struck her with the axe as she lay on the floor.

Sumner was cleared of attempted murder at Sheffield Crown Court earlier this year but convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
The events of that day changed my life for ever
Yesterday when the axeman appeared for sentence, the court heard Sumner had chased Lisa shouting: “I’m gonna kill you”.
In a victim impact statement Lisa said: “The events of that day changed my life for ever.
“I have had to cancel both my wedding and honeymoon.
