A GREAT grandfather born "with a bang” on the night that German Zeppelins rained bombs down on his home during World World One has celebrated his 100th birthday.

George Pearson survived the mass destruction which claimed dozens of lives during a night of prolific bombing in Sheffield.
Mr Pearson, who subsequently served in World War Two, was born at 2am when the bombardment was at its height.
He said: “German Zeppelins dropped bombs on Attercliffe on the night I was born and 27 people were killed.
"I quite literally came into the world with a bang.”
From a large family of 13 siblings George is now the last remaining child having endured a series of hardships which included tragically losing his father at the tender age of nine.
George married his wife Evelyn in 1940 and the couple had 60 years of bliss before she died in 2000
He was stationed at Manor Lane Anti Aircraft battery during World War Two and was trained to fire rockets.

A lifelong Sheffield Wednesday fan, George later served in the Home Guard and became a big fan of the television series Dad’s Army - which reminded him vividly of his own experiences.
