Davis made the bizarre remark while reporting from the Labour Party conference in Liverpool before being met with mixed reactions from viewers.
The veteran BBC broadcaster, introducing his interview with Jon Ashworth MP, said: "People are saying the war in the Labour Party is a bit like herpes, just when you think it's settling down it seems to erupt again."
He went on to ask Mr Ashworth if he felt his party's deputy leader Tom Watson was mounting a leadership coup, but the MP for Leicester South was left dumbfounded by the presenter's odd turn of phrase.
Mr Ashworth replied: "Sorry, I'm still trying to come to terms with that metaphor."
Davis, who had a wry smile on his face, said: "Don't worry, it was inappropriate."
Evan Davis made the outrageous remark comparing the Labour Party to herpes
The Dragon’s Den presenter’s comment divided Twitter users, with Valerian Spicer branding it a "fantastic analogy".
Others said they looked forward to some equally outlandish remarks at next week's Tory party conference.
Jon Ashworth was completely thrown by the herpes ananogy
But some users on the social media site were less than impressed with the analogy, calling for the presenter to be sacked from the show.
User Michael Garstang said: "Evan Davis just compared the Labour Party to herpes - surely his position is now in question?"
Some Twitter users did not see the funny side of Davis' remark
Saltley Gates also dubbed the analogy "blatant Conservative bias" from the veteran reporter while another user termed it "bizarre and gross".
Others said it did nothing to add to the tone of what should have been a serious political discussion with Mr Ashworth, who called for his party to unify in order to stand any chance of regaining power.
