NIGEL Farage has accused former European Council president Herman Van Rompuy of being “deluded” for claiming it would take Britain “years and years” to quit the EU.

Van Rompuy, who was once told by the former Ukip leader he had the “charisma of a damp rag and the appearance of a low-grade bank clerk”, also accused the UK of playing a “destructive” role within Europe.

He said: “The United Kingdom was never a full member of the European Union.”
Britain makes an annual net contribution to the EU of £8.5billion, the second biggest amount behind Germany.

Van Rompuy was replaced as European Council president by Donald Tusk
Van Rompuy, 68, who was succeeded by Donald Tusk, said Brexit was not a European phenomenon but that Europe had been made a “scapegoat” for it.
“The negotiations will take years and years. The British have voted against their own interest. The EU can go further without Britain on security, defence and foreign policy.”
