Keeping cool in a heatwave could burn a hole in your pocket
Hot weather drives a rush to buy new lightweight clothing including shorts, tops and footwear while just keeping an electric fan blowing through the hottest days of summer can add £49 to the average electricity bill.
Those prepared to go one step further and buy an air-conditioning unit can expect spend an extra £108 to keep it running, according to a study by shopping website TopCashback.

Air fresheners, paddling pools and cooling sprays were other items popular as the mercury climbs with 56 per cent of 2,000 adults polled saying they would buy a thinner duvet for sticky summer nights.
The research found the average Briton will spend £60 on fans, sprays ands ice packs, £186 on summer clothes and £50 on ice creams, cold drinks and salads.
