A leaked memo sent to NEC members said the Home Office could stop the conference taking place in Liverpool from September 25 to 28 without adequate security measures.

Now organisers are in discussions with sole bidder Showsec. But the GMB Union has accused Showsec of preventing its workforce from unionising.

A GMB memo to Labour General Secretary Ian McNicoll said: “We are in the very difficult position of having to appoint a potentially anti-union organisation to a high profile role at annual conference.”
G4S said: “We are disappointed not to continue a successful working relationship.”

A spokeswoman for Showsec said the company was unwilling to comment. Labour refused to comment on the memo but insisted the conference would go ahead.
