Reize Spriggs, 20, became angry with his dad following a dispute over the best sealant to use on his bath.
Following the row at work, Spriggs stormed round to his dad's home in Daybrook, Nottingham, and threatened him with a knife on March 29.
Prosecutor Lee Shepherd said: "The father exited the property and got into his vehicle outside.
It was rather bizarre and rather isolated
"Spriggs followed holding the knife and approached the near window of the father's vehicle.
"It was stationary and he made stabbing motions towards the window whilst holding the knife after the father drove away.
"A witness saw some of the incident and what he purported to be a knife in his hand, making stabbing motions."

Finn Butler, defending, said: "They had an argument at work whether a certain sealant would be better at sealing a bath. That was the background.
"It was rather bizarre and rather isolated. Without any doubt, Mr Spriggs acted in an unusual way."
