Jailed...bully who forced lover to run treadmill every day
A VIOLENT brute who forced his girlfriend to run on a treadmill because she “didn’t look as hot” as glamour models, has been jailed for two-and-a-half years in a historic ruling.
Finally free of her violent abuser
Mohammed Anwaar threatened Gemma Doherty with violence as he bombarded her with photographs of beautiful women saying she did not measure up.
The 27-year-old had a collection of snaps of internet fitness sensation Gracyanne Barbosa he used to compare with Miss Doherty, 30.
For over a year he forced her to exercise and controlled what she ate.
If she went out he made her wear men’s clothes so as not to attract male attention.
Anwaar pleaded guilty to a charge of controlling or coercive behaviour, a law only brought in at the end of last year. He also admitted nine counts of assault and criminal damage.
He would only let me eat tuna and beetroot
Appearing for sentencing at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday, Judge Julian Goose told Anwaar: “You have a history of violence.”
His conviction under legislation to tackle controlling behaviour could lead to cases with offenders facing five-year terms.
The law was introduced to tackle abuse which does not amount to violence but still generates alarm or distress and affects day-to-day activities.
Victim Gemma Doherty
Anwaar abused Miss Doherty mentally, he repeatedly hit her in front of her sons, choked her unconscious and held a knife to her throat asking her if she wanted him to kill her.
After the hearing, Miss Doherty said: “He would only let me eat tuna and beetroot.
I was wasting away, forced to lose all these calories every day.

“I felt like a zombie on autopilot and was at his beck and call, whatever and whenever.”
She added: “He’d make me look at and practise Graceyanne Barbosa fitness routines.
If I didn’t he would beat me.”
