Ten people were learning how to detain troublemakers using handcuffs when Nathan Webb opened an unlocked Vauxhall Astra and tried to steal a sat-nav.
But the 39-year-old was soon surrounded by the trainee doormen including the owner of the car Danny Rose who dragged him out of the vehicle.
The thief was asked if he was "stupid" to try to steal when so many bouncers were nearby and he replied that he had to "take a chance".
I said to him, 'Are you stupid mate?'
The incident happened at The Training Hub in Manchester. The centre's boss Marcus Gentles handcuffed Webb and held him till police arrived.
Mr Gentles, who has been a bouncer for 16 years and is an ex-Fusilier, thought the incident had been staged as part of the training course.
He said: "It was just so funny. He came up to a building where we teach doormen how to arrest people and tried to steal from them.
"I said to him, 'Are you stupid mate? There are big signs outside'. And he said, 'You've got to take a chance, mate'."
The training centre offer Security Industry Authority (SIA) approved sessions for aspiring doormen.
Webb was charged for the incident on September 22 and appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court the following day.
He pleaded guilty to theft from a motor vehicle and will be sentenced at Manchester Crown Court later this month.
