Van Dyck painting identified by Fiona Bruce and tipped for £500k fails to sell
A PAINTING identified by Antiques Roadshow presenter Fiona Bruce as a Van Dyck failed to sell last night.
The portrait, which she recognised during an episode of the BBC show, cost £400 at an antique shop 12 years ago.
It had been expected to fetch £500,000 at auction in London but a spokesman for Christie’s said last night: “It failed to find a buyer.”
Fiona spotted the painting during filming and asked expert Philip Mould to look at it. Its owner, Father Jamie MacLeod, had earmarked any profit to buy new church bells at a retreat he runs in the Peak District.
In 2009 a self-portrait by Sir Anthony Van Dyck sold for £8.3million.
