Man killed after being hit by car while walking on motorway late at night
A MAN in his twenties was killed after he was hit by a car while walking on a motorway last night.
Police believe the man, who was hit by a Skodia Octavia on the M61 near Bolton around 11.20pm, had been to a Tinie Tempah concert hours beforehand.
Officers said it was not clear how the man, who was around 5 ft 5 in, came to be walking on the motorway.
The motorway was closed for a number of hours after the collision but it has now fully reopened.
At this stage it is not clear how or why he came to be walking on the motorway
Sergeant Lee Westhead, from the serious collision investigation unit of Greater Manchester Police, said: "We are working to establish the full circumstances leading to this young man's death.
"At this stage it is not clear how or why he came to be walking on the motorway.
"Our efforts to identify the man have proved to be unsuccessful, however we believe he may have been to a Tinie Tempah concert at the O2 Apollo in Manchester earlier in the evening.
"We are now appealing for the public to come forward with information to help with our inquiries."
The car was travelling southbound when it hit the person walking in the carriageway between Rivington North Services and Junction 6.
The pedestrian is described as having light brown hair and was aged in his mid twenties.
Mr Westhead added: "We are now appealing for the public to come forward with information to help with our inquiries.
"If you are worried about a friend or relative who has not returned home and who fits the description please get in touch as soon as possible. Similarly, if you saw a man walking on the motorway or have any information as to why he would be there, please get in touch."
