Bike star Sean Emmett arrested over wife’s honeymoon death
AN English former Superbike racer at the centre of a police investigation in Dubai after his wife died on their honeymoon returned to the UK yesterday to be immediately arrested on suspicion of her murder.
Sean Emmett, 43, had been stranded for 10 months in the United Arab Emirates after his passport was handed to officials during the investigation into bride Abigail’s death.
Following the passport’s return, he flew in from Dubai and was held by police at Heathrow Airport yesterday morning.
Before leaving Dubai for the UK, he had posted a picture of the newly-returned document on Twitter, describing it as the “best early Xmas pressie ever”.
He wrote on the social networking site: “Thanks to everyone for all your messages, my phone’s melting!! Flight booked and I’ll be landing in Blighty 7.10 tmrw. £bringonthecold.”
Mrs Emmett, 27, died in February after falling several floors from a high-rise hotel in Dubai.
Surrey Police confirmed Mr Emmett had been arrested, saying detectives had “reason to suspect” foul play had taken place.
A spokesman said: “This is the first opportunity Surrey officers have had to speak to him.”
Abigail’s father Christopher Elson, a vicar in Ripley near Woking in Surrey, said after her death: “Abbie’s family and friends are shocked and devastated by this tragic event.
“She was loved for her talent and humour by us all.”
