Schools teaching ‘on the cheap’
SCHOOLS are “teaching on the cheap” by using unqualified staff to take lessons, a report reveals.
Teaching assistants and cover supervisors are being drafted in on a regular basis.
The Association of Teachers and Lecturers found a third of support staff quizzed had covered for absent teachers. More than 70 per cent had supervised a class.
Many criticised schools for making them do teachers’ work for less pay, branding it “teaching on the cheap”.
ATL general-secretary Dr Mary Bousted said: “Schools sell pupils short by using them when the teacher is unavailable.
“They are used as a cheap option. It is grossly unfair on them and pupils.”
