Binmen heroes foil betting shop thief
THREE binmen were hailed as have-a-go heroes yesterday for thwarting a robbery by chasing a thief in their dustcart.
They saw a man ambush a betting shop cashier on his way to a post office to bank his takings.
The trio caught up with the yob who fled empty-handed in a getaway car after dropping the takings. Cashier David Henry, 59, of BetFred in Ingol, Lancs, was shaken but unhurt.
He said: “Without those lads on the bin wagon, he would have got clean away.
“What they did was marvellous, I can’t thank them enough.
“They scared the living daylights out of him.
“I gave chase but at my age there’s no way I would have caught him. It was like something out of a film.”
The binmen’s boss, Duncan Coward, 39, of Preston City Council, said: “I’m very proud of the lads.”
Police said: “They were brilliant.”
Two men, aged 26 and 27, arrested on suspicion of robbery have been released on bail pending inquiries.
