David Cameron tells EU: Act urgently on Gibraltar
DAVID Cameron stepped up pressure on Spain in the deepening row over Gibraltar last night by demanding that the EU “urgently” send a team to monitor border checks.
The Prime Minister spoke to EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to raise “serious concerns” that Spain’s actions in using the checks to delay traffic entering or leaving the Rock for hours at a time are “politically motivated”.
Britain says the checks are “contrary to the EU right of free movement”.
Spain says they are essential to stop smuggling and are legal and proportionate but they began only after Gibraltar installed an artificial reef which is hindering local Spanish fishermen.
Spain claims sovereignty over the British territory.
