Nick Clegg vows to fly the ‘gay flag’ with pride
NICK Clegg has risked intensifying anger over same-sex marriage by vowing to fly the “gay pride” flag at his Whitehall department.
The Lib Dem Deputy Prime Minister said the rainbow-coloured flag will be hoisted over the Cabinet office during the London Gay Pride week next month.
He has called on other departments to follow his lead and raise the flag.
But the move is likely to be seen as a provocative gesture by many of the 133 Tory MPs who this week voted against the Coalition’s plan to legalise same-sex marriage.
The decision to fly the flag is also backed by Tory Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude, another supporter of same-sex marriage legislation.
A Cabinet Office spokesman said: “We are proud to fly the flag and look forward to a time when same-sex couples can get married.”
Pride week is from June 23 to 30.
