100 drivers in go-slow fuel demo
FUEL price protesters staged a demo yesterday outside one of Britain’s biggest oil refineries.
Around 100 vehicles held a go-slow on motorway routes in North Wales and the North-west before converging on the Stanlow refinery at Ellesmere Port.
The Stanlow Fuel Protest and Direct Action Group, which recruited supporters through Facebook, had reportedly said 600 vehicles would take part, supported by 3,000 demonstrators. It warned pumps would run dry until the Government gave in to their demands to reduce fuel tax duty. But expected numbers on the protest were well down.
Ian Charlesworth, one of the organisers, claimed the demo had “shut down” the refinery for “a number of hours”.
However, petrol tankers were seen to arrive and leave the refinery freely.
