By George! Shame of English who believe David is our patron saint
SAINT David is our patron saint, Beefeaters are a restaurant chain and Chelsea Pensioners are retired footballers, according to a worrying survey.
In the poll of 2,000 English men and women, one in 10 thought Wales’s St David was Patron Saint rather than St George and one in six think Beefeaters are pubs instead of Yeomen of the Guard at the Tower of London.
One in 20 reckon Chelsea Pensioners were players in Roman Abramovich’s West London football club rather than distinguished ex-servicemen. More than half couldn’t even identify England’s flag.
Stephen Garnett, editor of This England magazine which commissioned the report, said yesterday: “It is disheartening that there is a lack of awareness about our heritage.
“Clearly more needs to be done to educate English people about our history and traditions.”
