Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstacy centenary: Still in ecstasy after 100 years
A HUNDRED Rolls-Royce cars formed a cavalcade yesterday to mark the centenary of a very special lady.
The Spirit of Ecstasy – the iconic silver figurine which adorns every Rolls-Royce – turns 100 this year.
Vintage and modern models, including the first to carry the statuette from 1911, drove through central London on a route including Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.

The Spirit of Ecstasy was modelled on Eleanor Thornton, the lover of motoring pioneer Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, a friend of the statuette’s designer Charles Sykes.
Miss Thornton met Lord Montagu while working at his Car Illustrated magazine, but she died in 1915 when a ship taking the couple to India was torpedoed and did not live to see the icon’s success.
