Morrisons and Asda have confirmed a new £13 rule across UK stores in July in a major boost for workers. Both supermarket chains are increasing pay rates for some staff roles, with the increase being rolled out in phases. Morrisons announced in May that a proposed pay deal for supermarket and manufacturing colleagues covered by the national agreement with USDAW secured a 91.87% in favour from staff and will be implemented in three stages.

The first stage began in March and saw hourly pay rates for a Customer Assistant increase to £12.81, and this is due to rise again for the second stage in July. From Monday, July 20, Morrisons has confirmed that the established rate of pay for a Customer Assistant will increase from £12.81 to £13, and all other established hourly rates for roles covered by the agreement will increase by 19p.

The third stage will commence from Monday, October 26, taking the established rate of pay for a Customer Assistant from £13 to £13.11, with all other established hourly rates for roles covered by the agreement set to increase by 11p.

Additionally, all eligible hourly paid Morrisons staff will receive a one off fixed payment of between £25 and £175 based on their Contractual Hours.

Jodie Keating, Group People Director of Morrisons said: “We’re pleased that we can now implement the pay proposal and increase pay for our colleagues to reward them for the contribution they make to our business. I would like to thank all our colleagues for everything they continue to do for Morrisons.”

Asda is also increasing pay for 110,000 of its hourly-paid staff with a 4% above-inflation pay rise, which is being delivered across two dates.

The first phase of the pay rise rollout took effect on April 1, taking national hourly pay rates for staff based in Asda Retail and Asda Express stores outside the M25 from £12.60 to £12.71 - a rise of 11p per hour.

For workers based in Asda stores inside the M25, hourly pay rates increased from £13.82 to £13.93 on April 1 - an 11p per hour rise. But workers are due to receive a further pay boost next month July as Asda delivers the second phase of the rollout.

From Sunday, July 5, hourly pay rates will increase from £12.71 to £13.10 for staff based in stores outside the M25 - a pay rise of 39p per hour.

Meanwhile, staff based in stores inside the M25 will see their hourly pay rise from £13.93 to £14.35 from July 5 - an increase of 42p per hour.

Asda said the total investment in retail pay since its acquisition by TDR Capital and the Issa brothers in 2021 now reaches £575 million. Over this period, hourly pay rates have increased by 40%, rising from £9.36 in 2021 to £13.10 in 2026.

James Goodman, Chief People Officer, Asda, said: “Our store‑based colleagues are at the core of our business and the role they play serving customers is central to our Formula for Growth turnaround plan.

“I’m pleased we’ve been able to give them an above‑inflation pay award and invest in this way. I’d also like to thank them for their continued hard work and commitment to making Asda better every day.”
