M4 traffic RECAP: Closure in both directions as emergency services rush to scene

M4 drivers are facing heavy traffic this evening as emergency services respond to a "police-led incident". The major UK motorway is closed in both directions between junction 17 (Chippenham) and junction 18 (Bath).

Emergency services, including Wiltshire Police, have rushed to the scene. Drivers have been warned by National Highways to expect delays to their journey. Motorway traffic cameras show vehicles at a standstill on approach to the incident. One driver on the M4 told the Daily Express that police cars "whizzed past". National Highways said in a statement: "The M4 in Wiltshire is closed in both directions between J17 (Chippenham) and J18 (Bath) due to a Police led incident. Emergency services including Wiltshire Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene to assist with traffic management."

All lanes have reopened

National Highways said the M4 in Wiltshire between J18 Bath and J17 Chippenham is now open in both directions.

It added: "Delays of 10 minutes on approach in both directions."

Motorists urged to 're-route'

National Highways has urged the motorists to "re-route" their journeys in case the closure impacts them.

It said: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.

"Further information is available from National Highways by visiting our www.trafficengland.com website and travel apps, or via our regional X feed. Our 24/7 contact centre team is also available to provide up to the minute information on 0300 123 5000."

Diversion route to follow:

Road users travelling eastbound are advised to follow the solid square diversion symbol on road signs:Leave the M4 at J18 and take the 3rd exit onto the A46 heading south.  Follow the A46 to the roundabout with the A420 at Cold Ashton and take the 1st exit onto the A420 heading east. Continue on the A420 to the roundabout with the A350 at Chippenham and take the 1st exit onto the A350.  Proceed on the A350 back to the M4 J17 and rejoin the M4 eastbound to continue your journey. Road users travelling westbound are advised to follow the solid diamond symbol on road signs:Leave the M4 at J17 and take the 2nd exit onto the A350 heading south.  Follow the A350 south to the roundabout with the A420 and take the 4th exit onto the A420 heading west.  Continue on the A420 to the roundabout with the A46 at Cold Ashton and take the 3rd exit onto the A46 heading north.  Follow the A46 north back to the M4 J17 and take the 1st exit to rejoin the M4 westbound to continue your journey.
