Liverpool Central train station has been closed after a fire, with Merseyrail lines delayed as a result.

Smoke was seen coming from a control room. The station was evacuated and closed, along with underground stations on the Merseyrail loop having their power cut as a precaution.

Queues have built outside Moorfields Station, with services into the city centre being suspended while Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service deal with the incident.

Rail replacement bus services are in operation.

Merseyrail disruption

Train services across the Merseyrail network are facing widespread disruption after a fire alarm was activated at Liverpool Central station.

Services on multiple lines have been partially suspended or shortened, with trains unable to run through the city centre.

-Chester and Ellesmere Port lines are operating only as far as Birkenhead Central

-West Kirby and New Brighton lines are running to Birkenhead North

-Southport, Ormskirk and Headbolt Lane lines are terminating at Sandhills

-Hunts Cross services are currently suspended

Rail replacement buses are in operation between key stations and the city centre, including Moorfields, while tickets are being accepted on local bus services and selected alternative rail routes.

Passengers are being advised they can use tickets at no extra cost on replacement buses, as well as on some services run by Transport for Wales and Northern Rail where applicable.

Due to the fire alarm being activated at Liverpool Central, services on both the Wirral & Northern lines are disrupted.

Fire service statement

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue service said:

"Fire crews are in attendance at Liverpool Central Station, Ranelagh Street, Liverpool after reports of smoke issuing from a building at the rear of the station. Crews were alerted at 12.14pm and on scene at 12.21pm, with two fire engines currently in attendance.

"In line with established safety procedures a full evacuation of the station and trains has been performed as a precaution. Trains have been suspended and electrics isolated so fire crews can investigate.

"There is currently no power to the loop meaning there may be some disruption to journeys, please go to Merseyrail.org or Merseyrail social media channels for more information."
