An illegal waste dump has been discovered at a beauty spot, with 30,000 tonnes of filth and rubbish at a site near the M57 motorway. Shocking pictures show waste piled high in an area off the M57 near Kirkby, Merseyside.

Local politicians described the dump as "horrendous" and "utterly shocking". Councillor Graham Morgan, leader of Knowsley Council, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) he was "totally shocked". He said: "It's horrendous and we are furious at the sheer contempt those responsible have shown for our residents and for the habitat on this site."

Cllr Morgan said the Environment Agency and Merseyside Police are investigating, adding that those responsible needed to be pursued and prosecuted.

The discovery followed members of the public spotting people at the site without permission.

The scale of fly-tipping at the site arguably makes it the largest illegal waste dump to be discovered in the UK.
