Thank you for following along

Thanks for staying with us this evening. To recap, there were long delays on the M62 eastbound after a multi-vehicle crash closed three lanes between Junction 11 (Birchwood) and Junction 12 (Eccles Interchange).

Traffic was held up for more than 90 minutes at its worst. Lanes gradually reopened through the evening. National Highways says the incident should clear shortly, and conditions are slowly returning to normal.

Conditions expected to return to normal by 8:45pm

National Highways says traffic should return to normal later this evening. They expect the incident to clear between 8pm and 8:15pm, with normal conditions likely between 8:30pm and 8:45pm.

Only one lane now remains closed and delays have reduced to around 10 minutes. Live motorway cameras also show traffic beginning to move more freely through the area.

Only one lane remains closed

National Highways says three out of four lanes have now reopened on the M62.

In a post on X, they said: “1 (of 4) lanes are now closed on the #M62 in #GreaterManchester eastbound between J11 and J12 following a multi vehicle collision.

"National Highways Traffic Officers are currently on scene dealing with traffic management. Recovery has been arranged for all vehicles.”

Separate crash on the M6

There is also disruption on the M6 southbound tonight.

A separate crash has closed lanes at Junction 20 in Cheshire, adding to delays.

Two lanes reopen

Traffic monitoring service Inrix says lanes two and three have now reopened.

One lane is still closed, and congestion remains severe for anyone joining from the Warrington and Birchwood areas.

Delays of 90 minutes reported

National Highways says drivers are facing 90-minute delays tonight due to the crash.

Traffic is heavily backed up on one of Greater Manchester’s busiest stretches, especially for those heading towards Manchester during rush hour.

Officials say they expect normal traffic conditions to return at around 7.30pm.

National Highways update

National Highways shared an update on X confirming their officers were at the scene.

They said: “3 (of 4) lanes closed on the #M62 in #GreaterManchester eastbound between J11 and J12 following a multi vehicle collision.

"National Highways Traffic Officers are currently on scene dealing with traffic management.”
