Only four women have received whole life terms in British legal history.

First was Myra Hindley, the twisted Moors murderer who slaughtered five youngsters between 1963 and 1966.

Then there was Rosemary West and her notorious house of horrors, where she butchered 10 children alongside her husband in Gloucester.

More recently, there was Lucy Letby, the Chester infant killer controversially found guilty of seven medical murders.

But lesser known on that list is Joanna Christine Dennehy, the Cambridgeshire "ditch killer" who slaughtered three men during a 10-day rampage in March 2013 because she wanted to emulate Bonnie and Clyde, reports the Mirror.

As she revealed to an accomplice in 11 chilling words: "I want my fun. I need you to get my fun."

Dennehy was born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, in August 1982.

According to all reports, she enjoyed a privileged, stable and nurturing childhood and excelled academically.

Her parents harboured hopes that she would one day pursue a career in law.

However, by her mid-teens Dennehy had become consumed by alcohol, drugs and minor criminal activity.

She began truanting from school and associating with lads considerably older than herself.

By 15 she had departed the family home to cohabit with John Treanor, a man several years her senior with whom she would bear two children.

The pair would row and brawl, frequently with violence.

Dennehy allegedly began carrying a blade and openly expressing her urge to kill.

Fearing for his own safety, Treanor relocated away from Dennehy and took custody of the children, rendering his former partner without a home. In 2012, Dennehy was apprehended for theft and diagnosed with anti-social behaviour disorder whilst in prison.

Upon her release, she entered into a sexual relationship with 48-year-old Kevin Lee, a Peterborough father who provided affordable accommodation to those in need. Dennehy began working for Lee as an "enforcer", assisting him in collecting rent from delinquent tenants.

Fast forward to March 2013, Dennehy brutally murdered Lukasz Slaboszewski, a Polish national who considered Dennehy his girlfriend and shared a mutual fondness for alcohol and drugs. After meeting Dennehy, he had texted a friend saying: "Life is beautiful".

Dennehy later confessed to a psychiatrist that she killed Slaboszewski "to see if I was as cold as I thought I was". She lured the man to her home with sexually suggestive text messages before stabbing him in the heart and discarding his body in a wheelie bin.

She then showed the corpse to a 14-year-old girl she had befriended, confessing that she found the act of murder "moreish" and subsequently developed "a taste for it". Just over a week later, Dennehy stabbed her housemate, 56-year-old John Chapman, to death with a pocket knife, texting an accomplice: "Oops, I've done it again."

She later murdered Kevin Lee on the same day, luring him with promises of sexual favours before stabbing him upon his arrival at the home he rented to her. She dressed his lifeless body in a black sequined dress and posed it in a ditch, deliberately leaving his backside exposed.

During her trial, the judge stated that she had intended to intentionally humiliate Lee even in death.

A few weeks later, Dennehy was eager for more bloodshed. Her accomplice, Gary Stretch, drove her to nearby Hereford where she randomly attacked two dog walkers within a mere nine minutes, leaving both men for dead.

After the attacks, she took the second victim's dog with her. In November 2013, Dennehy pleaded guilty to three counts of murder and two of attempted murder.

The presiding judge, Mr Justice Spencer, labelled her "a cruel, calculating, selfish and manipulative murderer".

Stretch also received a life sentence, while two other accomplices were handed sentences of 14 and three years respectively. There is no clear motive behind Dennehy's killing spree beyond a simple desire to kill.

Witnesses at the trial claimed that Dennehy had fantasised about being like Bonnie and Clyde. Gary Stretch confessed that she had told him the murders were "entertainment" for her.

She also reportedly expressed a desire to harm and kill only men, vowing never to attack a woman, particularly one with children like herself. During the trial, Mr Justice Spencer revealed that Dennehy suffered from paraphilia sadomasochism, a psychological disorder characterised by deriving sexual pleasure from inflicting pain and humiliation.

Since her incarceration, Dennehy has embarked on relationships with several fellow prisoners, whom she claims she plans to wed. She has also attempted to sue the justice secretary, alleging that her solitary confinement "violates her human rights".

A representative for the prison where she is held labelled Dennehy as "arguably the most dangerous female prisoner" in the UK.
